Un moment extraordinaire. On ne connaît pas vraiment Jo tant qu’on ne l’a pas vue en vrai. C’est à dire sans caméra de télévision qui transforme l’atmosphère.
Jo est donc venue ce mardi 12 Février 2007, à l’invitation de la Literary & Historical Society rencontrer les étudiants dublinois de l’UCD. C’est dans un amphithéâtre bondé et parfois hystérique que Jo a passé une cinquantaine de minutes.
Au programme : une lecture d’un chapitre des reliques de la mort (le retour de Ron), et des questions réponses avec l’assistance.
L’ambiance est donnée dès l’arrivée de Jo. Applaudissements à tout rompre, et lorsque le calme revient, une personne s’écrie « I love You ! ». Jo, qui paraît bien plus chaleureuse et plus jeune que dans une apparition télévisuelle habituelle répond amusée : Moi aussi je vous aime…
Jo a toujours combattu les révélations : alors avant de commencer, elle prend tout de même le soin de demander : «A propos, est-ce que quelqu’un n’a pas lu les reliques de la mort ici ? [Rires] Non, c’est vrai, on ne sait jamais…»
Tout au long de la lecture, Jo révèle des détails amusants, mais le plus captivant est de la voir interpréter tour à tour Ron, Harry ou Hermione, adaptant son ton, ses mimiques et sa gestuelle aux personnages qu’elle incarne (ce qui ne l’empêchera pas de s’excuser si ce n’est pas bon, car elle n’a pas l’habitude…).
Viennent les questions. Elles ont été sélectionnées par les organisateurs et soumises l’avant-veille à Jo.
Bref aperçu avant la retranscription qui devrait arriver dans la semaine :
Jo confirme que l’histoire de Rogue et Dumbledore était fixée avant la publication du 1er opus de la série, mais en revanche affirme ne pas penser au film lorsqu’elle écrit (même si elle a eu une pensée pour les producteurs après avoir écrit les pages de la bataille de Poudlard !).
Si Jo devait rencontrer un personnage, ce serait Dumbledore (cependant qui ne serait pas tenté de faire un câlin à Hagrid ?)
Quant à la question de l’opposition du Pape à Harry Potter, Jo avoue ne pas vraiment suivre le sujet. Tout ce qu’elle peut répondre c’est qu’elle est fondamentalement opposée à la censure, mais aussi que Harry Potter est avant tout un livre moral plus qu’un livre prosélyte.

Avait-elle jamais pensé tuer Harry ? Non, mais elle est heureuse que les lecteurs aient pensé que ce soit possible.
Evidemment, la question de l’homosexualité de Dumbledore a refait surface. La qualité de la réponse me pousse à vous faire attendre la retranscription…
S’il y a une chose que Jo aurait aimé inclure dans son récit, c’est de donner au cousin cracmol des Weasley une fille surdouée qui aurait fait un peu d’ombre à Hermione et … finalement ça ne collait pas dans l’histoire.
«Dumbledore est Harry venu de l’avenir» gagne le titre de pire théorie jamais entendu par J.K. Rowling.
Finalement, J.K.Rowling a reçu le prix James Joyce (qui était tout de même l’objectif de la soirée) pour son succès en librairie et pour avoir redonné le goût de la littérature aux jeunes.

N.B. : Il était formellement interdit de filmer la remise du prix. C’est peut-être injuste pour les millions de fans qui n’étaient pas là, certes, mais c’est finalement à ce prix que peut perdurer l’intimité qui était la nôtre ce soir…

An extraordinary moment. We barely know Jo without having seen her directly, without any TV camcorder that would change the atmosphere.
So Jo came this Tuesday 12 February, invited by the Literary & Historical Society, to meet the students of the University College in Dublin (UCD). It’s in an overcrowded and sometimes hysterical room that Jo spent about 50 minutes.
The program was a public lecture of a chapter of the Deathly Hallows (when Ron comes back with Harry and Hermione), and some question/Answers with the public.
When Jo arrives, the atmosphere was tremendous: loud applause, and when the silence came back, someone yelled “I love you!”. Jo, who seems warmer and younger than in a TV show, answered, obviously amused, I love you too…
Jo has always fought spoilers: so she asked before starting: Has someone not read the Deathly Hallows [Laughing] No, that’s true, we never know…
While reading, Jo revealed some amusing stuff, but the most amazing thing is to watch her acting Ron, Hermione and Harry, modulating her voice, her face in order to fit the character (nevertheless, she apologised because she wasn’t used to this kind of exercise…).
Then, the questions came. They were selected by the staff and submitted to Jo a few days before.
This is an overview, until we finish the transcription work (by the end of the week).
Jo confirms that Snape and Dumbledore’s histories were established before the Philosopher stone was published, but states that she doesn’t think about the movie when she writes (even though she had a thought for the producers after having written the battle of Hogwarts, realising how much it would cost !)
If Jo were to meet a character, she would definitely pick up Dumbledore (even if she had been tempted by a hug with Hagrid)
As for the opposition of the Pope to Harry Potter, she confesses that she doesn’t follow the issue. Basically, she is definitely opposed to censorship and sees Harry Potter more as a moral book than a proselyte one

Has she already thought about killing Harry? No, but Jo is happy that the readers considered the option.
Of course, the question of the homosexuality of Dumbledore arose again. It would be unfair to sum up such a quality answer, so wait for the transcription…
If there is something that Jo would have liked to include in the books, it would have been to give a daughter to the Weasley’s squid cousin. She would have lived with them and as a very skilled magician; she would have created competition for Hermione. But it didn’t go well with the story…
“Dumbledore was Harry from the future” wins the title of the worst theory ever heard by J.K. Rowling.
At last, J.K. Rowling received the James Joyce award for her numerous book sales and having given back to the youth the taste of literature.
By the end of this week, we should publish a full transcription of the evening.
N.B.: It was totally forbidden to record the ceremony. It might be unfair for the millions of fans who weren’t there; nevertheless, it is probably the cost in order to keep the intimate atmosphere we experienced tonight…
